SCHOLARSHIP AND AWARD WINNERS

John Littlefield (BS Anthropology 2007). John presented a poster of his recent research entitled "The Use of Observation Point Data in Regional Survey and its Potential for Improving Inter-Regional Syntheses in Landscape Archaeology" at the Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America in San Diego, CA.  John  was accepted to the Graduate Program in Anthropology, Texas A&M University, where he will be attached to the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INAA), one of the most prestigious programs in the world for underwater archaeology.  He will continuing his interest in Aegean archaeology through his participation in investigations at Kizilburun, Turkey in summer 2008. John was accepted to participate in the Excavations at the Athenian Agora, Athens, Greece (summer 2007), on the basis of a nationally-competitive process. He received a Regents' Fellowship for graduate work at Texas A&M. This prestigious fellowship carries with it a stipend, a 1- or 2- year research assistantship, and an out-of-state tuition waiver. The fellowship was offered to John based upon his "strong academic standing and promise for graduate-level research."

Jackie Marenick has accepted a position with the Poggio Civitate Excavation Project, directed by Dr. Anthony Tuck (University of  Massachusetts, Amherst).  This is Jackie's second year of working  at the site.  She has been asked to return, where she will be training to supervise an area of the site.

Jennifer Dennis has accepted a position on the team excavating the Mycenaean settlement Mitrou in East Lokris, Greece, under the direction of Dr. Aleydis Van de Moortel (University of Tennessee).  This is Jennifer's second year of working at Mitrou. She will be assisting with recording and documenting the artifacts as they are excavated.

Katie Jennings will be participating in the field school at the Villa delle Vignacce in Rome.  It is affiliated with the American Institute for Roman Culture.

Jennifer Fox has been accepted to participate in the field school at Mitrou, a Mycenaean settlement in East Lokris, Greece. 

Lauren Johnson has been accepted to participate in the Elymi Project, a fieldschool opportunity in Sicily under the direction of Dr. Michael Kolb (Northern Illinois University).

Ansley Beard has been accepted to participate in the field school at Mitrou.

Amanda Davis has been accepted to the Keros Archaeological Project, directed by Lord Colin Renfrew of Cambridge University.  Lord Renfrew is one of the most notable Aegean prehistorians in the world today.

Elizabeth Ilderton (AB Classics '07)  Completed a senior thesis: "Continuity and Change in the Use of the Alahan Cave Church, Rough Cilicia, Turkey."

Mike Overholt, a student of Dr. Robert Smith at the College of Charleston, received a scholarship award from the Americal Classical Association.  He teaches at St. John's Academy in Moncks Corner and is beginning a Latin program there in fall of 2007.  He has a degree in Greek and is working toward certification in Latin.

Shannon Ferri has won the University of South Carolina's Belser Award for 2006. This award is part of a fund donated by the Belser family of Columbia, SC, to reward a student who excels in the study of Classical languages. Ms. Ferri was graduated this spring from USC and plans to pursue a Master's degree in English at the University.

Erick Bousman was presented the 2006 Alston Award in Classics at USC. Mr. Bousman has been accepted into the Classics Ph.D. program at the University of Toronto.

Guy Boudreaux has won USC's CAMWS award for 2006. Mr. Boudreaux is a junior who double majors in Classics and Math and plans to pursue a graduate degree in Ancient History.

Kevin Keith of Blythewood High School won an Honorable Mention for his essay, comparing President Bush to Phaeton, submitted to the 2006 Fox Classics Writing Contest at Monmouth College. He is taught by Martha Anne Boseski.

The College of Charleston graduated a record sixteen Classics majors during the 2005-2006 academic year. At graduation, the Mouzon Award in Classics and Departmental Honors were presented to Deana Zeigler. The Outstanding Student Award in Classics was presented to Hoa "Tee" Ho.

NATIONAL MYTHOLOGY EXAMINATION 2007-8

The Medusa Mythology Exam will administer its 12th annual exam during the week of March 24-28, 2008. Any student in grades 9-12 can participate. Sources can include Apollodorus, Homer, Ovid, and Vergil, plue modern works such as Hamilton's Mythology and Grimal's Dictionary of Classical Mythology. Fees for the exam are $3 per student and $15 per school. Financial aid is available. Registration forms are accepted until February 16 and are available on the exam committee's website or via email.
